Ernestine Theresa (Mayer) Wasson

Ernestine (Erna) Theresa Wasson passed away on February 9, 2018.

Erna was born January 8, 1926 in Dachau Germany. There she grew up with her loving parents, Hans and Theresa Mayer. In 1947 Erna came to the United States to wed the love of her life, Wayne Wasson, an American GI. She became a US citizen in the early 50s and embraced the American way of life.

Erna became an active member of the Eldorado community and spent countless hours volunteering and building lifelong friendships. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, a social sorority of women who enjoyed over 60 years of friendship. She also attended First United Methodist Church and was a member of the Fidelis Sunday school class.

Erna worked from home creating beautiful knitted apparel for several years. In 1965 she took a position at Burnett’s Bank where she was employed for 30+ years.

Erna loved all things German and was proud of her heritage. She enjoyed sharing stories and traditions from her homeland. She also had several groups of German friends who met regularly to reconnect to their roots.

In addition to being an excellent knitter Erna was also known to be a wonderful baker and consummate host. One of her greatest joys was entertaining family and friends.

Travel was one of Erna’s passions and she visited over 60 countries, including many visits to Germany to stay in touch with family and friends.

Erna was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Wayne Wasson, who died in 1979. She is survived by her son, Steven Wasson, his wife Jacqueline of Colleyville, Texas; her granddaughter, Angela Ward and her husband, Jeff of Atlanta, GA; and numerous cousins whom she loved dearly.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to First United Methodist Church in her honor. 

A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist on Tuesday, February 13 at 11am.
