Tom Cannan

Tom Cannan, age 95, long time Eldorado resident, passed away Saturday, March 17, 2018, in Bridgman, Michigan. 

Thomas E. Cannan, Jr. was born in Eldorado on July 16, 1922, to Thomas E. Sr. and Bess (Brown) Cannan.  He graduated from Eldorado High School in 1940. 

Following high school, he joined the Citizen Military Training Camp in Sparta, WI.  He then joined the Navy and became a flight instructor.  He left the Navy and was then drafted into the Army Air Corps and served as a flight instructor at several bases in the USA.  In January, 2017, Tom was interviewed for the Veterans History Project.  See and hear the interview at www.gvsu.edu/vethistory and click on the link to the archive in the middle of the page, then enter Cannan in the search box, and it will pop right up.

Tom returned to Eldorado and joined his father at Cannan Tin Shop.  Tom was the owner of Cannan Tin Shop until he retired.  He married Onita “Bobby” Tucker on June 28, 1947.  They were married for 67 years until Bobby passed away on June 21, 2014.  Together they enjoyed ballroom dancing, playing golf, and travel.  They traveled to Mexico, South America, Caribbean Islands, Europe, and Hong Kong. 

In addition to being a businessman, Tom was a member of the city council, mayor, and a member of the school board.  He was also a Rotarian and a Mason.  Tom was a member of the Eldorado First Baptist Church.

Survivors are daughter Judy Cannan and son-in-law Bob Walck of Benton Harbor, MI, his sister Helen Graves of Black Mountain, NC, and several nieces and nephews. 

Per his request there will be no visitation.  Graveside services will be held at 1:30 pm on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Wolf Creek Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Eldorado First Baptist Church or to a charity of your choice.  Condolences and expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family via the website www.colonialterracefuneralhome.com
